Tit For Tat

PokerStars announces a new poker television show? No problem, Full Tilt Poker has an answer to that. Just days after PokerStars announced their plans for “The Big Game,” Full Tilt has announced their newest TV show, “The Poker Lounge.”

The buy-in is $20,000 and six players, one qualifier and five Full Tilt pros, will battle it out for $120,000 in a winner-take-all format.

The Poker Lounge will be filmed in London and will run for 10 episodes, the first beginning on June 21. Channel 4 will carry the show on Mondays from 00:00 to 01:00 GMT.

Victory’s Latest Additions

Victory Poker has added two names to their roster: Jonathan Little and James “Andy McLEOD” Obst. They join the likes of Antonio Esfandiari, Andrew Robl, Sarah Underwood, and more as Victory Pros.

“I am proud to be the newest addition to Victory Poker. The site is full of great poker players as well as a wonderful team behind the scenes. We are working hard to make Victory Poker the best poker site on the web. Victory is actually run by poker players, not poker playing celebrities, which means we will tailor the site to people that actually play poker. Simply put, we are out to change the face of online poker,” Jonathan Little said about signing with the online site.

Victory will give the everyday grinder the chance to live like a pro later this year. Check out the press release here.

Hanging With the Guys

Team PKR has recently announced the latest addition to their team, as well. Sofia Lövgren from Gothenberg, Sweden, is the first woman to join Team PKR. Lövgren has been a regular at the PKR cash tables since 2008, playing under the screenname “welllbet.”

“It’s a pleasure to be the first female on the Team,” said Sofia. “It’s a very good opportunity for me to get to play big live tournaments and take my online game to the live scene. Playing poker and travelling are my favourite things, so this will be a great experience.”

Her first live tournament will be later this week at the Irish Open where she will join six of her teammates. “It’s fantastic to have Sofia on board. She is a top cash player with a lot of potential. We think she can go far, and this is only the beginning. Keep your eye on this girl for big things in the future,” said PKR Marketing Manager Erika Schwartz.

Take Sofia on at the tables by signing up for a PKR account.

Busted

A home game in the Myrtle Beach, S.C., area was busted Sunday and seven people were arrested. Authorities were tipped off by an anonymous caller — a concerned mother who said her son was at the location where a high-stakes poker game was being held.

Michael Green, the building’s owner, admitted to playing poker inside and was charged with unlawful games and betting. Six others were also taken into custody. The players were released later on that day on $250 bail.

The Nightly Turbo: Jerry Buss Going Pro, Robbers Hit Poker in Austin, and More

March 30th, 2010 -- Posted in Poker News | 1 Comment »

Is Jerry Buss giving up basketball? We’ll answer that, tell you about the robbery of a poker game in Austin and more, all in tonight’s Nightly Turbo.

In Case You Missed It

PokerStars has announced plans for a cash-game television show called “The Big Game.” We’d tell you all about it here, but we’ve written about it and we’re not too keen on repeating ourselves.

We’ve got Sunday Majors results today. It is Monday, after all. Check them out in the Sunday Briefing.

PokerNews will be covering the 2010 World Series of Poker. We’ve been doing this for a while now, so you can expect extensive coverage of all the bracelet events. Read more about it here.

Catch the latest episode of High Stakes Poker on GSN? Maybe you missed something. Lucky for you we’ve got a recap for you.

Buss-ting Your Flush

Jerry Buss loves basketball, women, and poker. At 77 years young, with nine NBA Championship banners for the LA Lakers, Buss is quite content with having his son make 80 percent of the basketball decisions and his daughter handle the business side. Buss has decided to focus his competitive spirit on poker.

In an interview with ESPN, Buss said he has decided to become a professional poker player. “Whether I can earn a living at it is questionable. But I do play in the World Series of Poker all the time,” he said. Why the interest? “The competition. I can’t think of too many things I can do as easily as that and be competitive at my age,” Buss said. He also said he’s not in it for the money.

Read the whole interview at ESPN.com.

Home Game Robbery

We’ve said it before, and we can’t stress it enough, please be careful at your home games. Over the weekend, a group of shotgun-wielding men blasted their way through the back door of a home game in Austin, Texas. Although shots were fired, none of the 24 players in the game was hurt. We’re not sure how much the thieves got away with.

Word on the street is that the Austin police arrested a least one robber when he used a stolen credit card later that night or the next day. This is an unconfirmed report, however.

Splashing the Pot

We don’t know what he’s saying in this clip, but apparently, Romanian football agent Giovani Becali was a little upset because the masseuse on duty was preoccupied with another customer. This madness ensued at the World Poker Tour stop in Bucharest. Becali threw his chips in the air, caused a ruckus, and chucked his credential at the tournament director. If we were the masseuse, we would’ve stayed far far away from him too!

It seems that Becali may be known for his outbursts. Check out Tony G’s blog on PartyPoker to see what he did to a sports tv presenter.

Congrats to One of Our Own

We’d like to congratulate Kirsty Mullins, PokerNews Australasia Magazine editor on winning the Joe Hachem Deep Stack Series ladies event at the Crown Poker Room.

The field was 114 deep for the $100 buy-in event. With three tables left, Mullins was down to less than a small blind but managed to fight back to contention and on to the win, taking home $2,519.

Congratulations Kirsty!!

WSOP Circuit

The World Series of Poker Circuit stop at Harrah’s Rincon in San Diego is in full swing and Dwyte Pilgrim is on a roll. He took two first-place finishes and a second-place finish at the Southern Poker Championship in January, first place at the Mega Stack Challenge in Mashantucket, and has just won his third WSOP-C gold ring. Pilgrim has won over $260,000 this year alone.

His third WSOP-C gold ring came in Event 8 at Harrah’s Rincon, topping a field of 169 players and taking home $13,392.

Event 11 saw a familiar name take second place. The event was the $100 buy-in no-limit hold’em ladies poker championship and 242 players came out to win gold. Poker must be in the blood of the Wasicka family; Leah Wasicka, Paul’s sister, took second place in the event that was eventually won by Susan Rhodes.

The Weekly Turbo: EPT Berlin Suspects Nabbed, Tony G Offers to Stake Isildur1, and a WSOP TOC Bribe

March 28th, 2010 -- Posted in Poker News | No Comments »

Busy week? Maybe you missed the story of Tony G offering to stake Isildur1 in a live televised cash game or the way Tom Schneider is trying to get votes for the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions. Lucky for you we’re recapping the whole week for you right now.

Arrested at the Airport

Last weekend, the third and fourth suspects of the European Poker Tour Berlin heist were nabbed. Twenty-year-old Mustafa Ucarkus was arrested at Tegel airport after his lawyer gave authorities a tip about where he was.

Jihad Chetwie, the final suspect was also arrested at the Tegal airport. Chetwie was flying back to Germany, having left the country after the robbery. He apparently decided that living in a German prison was better than living in Lebanon or getting arrested there.

Pokerati has more here and here.

Will Isildur1 Accept The G’s Offer?

The PartyPoker Big Game IV will take place from April 11 through 13 at the Les Ambassadeurs club in Mayfair. PokerNews’ own Tony G has offered to stake everyone’s favorite madman, Isildur1, for the game. If he accepts, he’ll be playing against Luke “FullFlush” Schwartz, Phil Laak, Issac Haxton, Neil Channing, Jennifer Tilly, and others.

The G offered the staking in his most recent blog on PartyPoker. He has offered to pay for Isildur’s flights, hotel, and stake in the 48-hour cash game. Not only that, but managing director of Matchroom Sport, Eddie Hearn, has even agreed to allow Isildur to wear a mask during the game to keep his identity unknown. Tony has offered up his Kermit the Frog mask or even to get one specially made for the event.

Even though he wants to stake Isildur, G wants to make one thing clear, “If I stake you, I still want to crush you and make you bleed from the mask…and I will!”

Will Isildur accept? We’re not for sure right now. Check out Tony’s blog on PartyPoker for more.

AGA Changing Its Tune?

The American Gaming Association, which has, for quite some time, been opposed to online gambling, seems to be singing a different tune as of late. President of the AGA Frank Fahrenkopf has said that the AGA is “open to the concept” as long as it is done the “right” way. The AGA is more in favor of a state-based regulation model, however, and it is remaining neutral on Barney Frank’s bill.

Can Your Vote Be Bought?

What’s the easiest way to get something you want from someone? Bribe Promise someone something, of course. So when the World Series of Poker left it up to the masses to vote on 20 of the 27 entrants of the 2010 Tournament of Champions, besides Twitter spamming the heck out of us, poker players had to come up with another way to get votes.

Tom “Donkeybomber” Schneider, in an effort to get votes, is promising to split half of what he wins with his voters. His stipulation is that you must vote only for him. Schneider isn’t even in the Top 50 yet, but who knows, promising money has a strange effect on people. If he wins, it’s a $250,000 free roll for his voters.

Spring Break is Over

PokerNews’ own Kristy Arnett is getting taken to school. Poker school, that is. She will be receiving poker lessons from DeucesCracked’s Andrew “BalugaWhale” Seidman.

The eight-part series will take an in-depth look at Seidman’s coaching skills and give Kristy and viewers the tools needed to begin crushing online poker — not the nosebleeds obviously, but you’ve got to start somewhere.

The series begins on April 5. Check out DeucesCracked.com for more.
