2010 June 29, Elaine Chaivarlis

In tonight’s Nightly Turbo we’re bringing you the day’s top poker news stories including PokerStars being granted a license in France, the latest ESPN Inside Deal with Dean Hamrick, Vanessa Rousso and Phil Laak, and more.

In Case You Missed It

Did you miss the Aussie Millions on GSN? Well, like every week, we’ve got you covered.

Looking for a place to party while you’re in Las Vegas? Why not try out XS or Surrender at Encore? You won’t be disappointed, but you don’t have to take our word for it. Read this. There are pictures, too!

The 2010 World Series of Poker is in the home stretch. Scott Montgomery has positioned himself for a second bracelet attempt this year, and a former teacher from Norway grabbed his first bracelet. Check out the Day 32 recap for more.

PokerStars News

Last week, we told you of the PokerStars poker players in France who wouldn’t be able to access their beloved site anymore because of the new legislation.

The players would have had to play for play money tournaments on PokerStars.fr. It seems like this may change on Wednesday, June 30, according to a press release. Once the French government has published the regulations for online poker, PokerStars.fr will begin running cash games.

“PokerStars.fr aims to be one of the leading online poker operators from
the day the French market opens, offering players the best tournaments,
promotions and opportunities to win seats at PokerStars world-renowned
international tournaments,” said PokerStars French Country Manager
Alexandre Balkany.

PokerStars has announced that it will be sponsoring the Empire State Hold’em Championship at Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York.

The event will run from August 14 through 18 and will feature a $2,500 buy-in main event. This event will be open to all players ages 18 and older.

“We are very excited about our new partnership with PokerStars.net and look forward to welcoming players to Turning Stone Resort for this premier poker event. There will be preliminary events beginning on August 9 leading up to the main event and several events running after the main event through August 22,” said Jason DiBenedetto, Director of Poker Operations at Turning Stone Resort and Casino.

You can qualify for this event on PokerStars. So sign up for an account today.

Inside Deal

ESPN’s Inside Deal is back this week with a fresh episode. Andrew Feldman joined Laura Lane to take care of the hosting responsibilities while Bernard Lee was in Las Vegas doing the poker thing.

The pair caught up with Dean Hamrick, who won his first gold bracelet over the weekend, Vanessa Rousso and Lee discussed what it is the “year of,” and Phil Laak joined the show to talk about his world record attempt for longest poker session.

Come to My Party

All right, so we’re going to chalk this one up to a rumor until it is confirmed one way or another. In our in-box this morning, we received an invite to a cocktail party hosted by PokerStars. Nothing strange about that. What was strange, however, was the line-up of players who would be there. It wasn’t Joe Cada’s name that caught our eye, but David Williams’ and Vanessa Selbst’s names.

Now, nowhere in this e-mail does it say that Selbst and Williams are signed or will potentially be signed by the online poker giant, but it just kind of strikes us as odd. We’ll let you guys come up with all the possible theories.

In any case, you can always sign up for a PokerStars account and take part of the PokerNews Mini Series of Poker going on now.

The Poker Show

PartyPoker will be sponsoring the latest season of “The Poker Show with Jesse May.” The first episode will premiere June 30 and will be available for download at 12 p.m. every Wednesday and Sunday throughout July.

After each of the first eight shows, on Thursdays and Mondays, there will be an exclusive PartyPoker tournament in which the winners will earn entry to a final freeroll on August 1. The winner of that freeroll will get a seat to the World Poker Tour London Poker Classic.

“I’m very excited about the new format. The last three seasons have been trial and error but I think we have cracked the formula. The key words are big names and fast paced ― the strength of the show has always been all the great contacts we have in the poker world but now we think we are coming to something that the listeners will love hearing rather than just the people we interview,” said Jesse May.

Sign up for a PartyPoker account today and win your way to London.

Lost Vegas

PokerNews Op-Ed writer Paul McGuire has just released his book, Lost Vegas, to the masses. And because this says it best (and also cuts out some work for us) here’s the description:

“Las Vegas lures you to shed moral responsibility and piss away your money on indulgences like decadent food, entertainment, gambling, and sex. If you don’t enjoy these pastimes, then what’s the point of visiting the land of compromised values? Where else can you get a cheap steak, crash a Mexican wedding, get cold-decked in blackjack by a dealer named Dong, play video poker for thirteen straight hours, drink piña coladas out of a plastic coconut, bum a cigarette from an 85-year-old woman with an oxygen tank, speed away to the Spearmint Rhino in a free limo, get rubbed by a former Miss Teen USA, puke in the back of a cab driven by a retired Navy SEAL, snort cheap cocaine in the bathroom at O’Sheas, and then catch a lucky card on the river to crack pocket aces and win a poker tournament? Only in Las Vegas.”

Calling the Clock: Jonathan Karamalikis

Lynn Gilmartin caught up with Jonathan Karamalikis just after he busted Day 1 of the $1,500 no-limit event. Great timing right? Well, he wasn’t too upset to call out some of his friends. Check out the video below.

The Nightly Turbo: The PokerStars Big Game, MoneyMaker and Esfandiari on Entourage, and More

June 29th, 2010 -- Posted in Poker News | No Comments »

2010 June 28, Elaine Chaivarlis

We’ve got a preview of the PokerStars Big Game, which is in its third week. Did you catch the premiere of Entourage last night? If you did, then you caught Chris Moneymaker and Antonio Esfandiari doing the acting thing. We’ve got these two stories and more, including Lynn Gilmartin giving a few pros a pop quiz, in tonight’s Nightly Turbo.

In Case You Missed It

There were huge overlays this week in the Sunday Majors. We’ve got the results in the Sunday Briefing.

The first intrastate Internet poker legislation discussion in California will take place on Tuesday. Find out a little bit more about the legislation here.

The 2010 World Series of Poker is chugging along and the 31st day saw two players win gold and the Tournament of Champions return from hiatus. Here’s the recap.

The Big Game

The PokerStars Big Game is back for its third week on the air, beginning Monday June 28. The Loose Cannon this week is Nadya Magnus, a 33-year-old single mom who has been playing poker for just two years. She takes on Barry Greenstein, Justin Bonomo, Jason Mercier, Joe Cada, and Daniel Alaei.

Magnus is being called the most aggressive Loose Cannon that the show has seen so far. Also, Bonomo dominates the table and Joe Cada and Barry Greenstein tangle in a huge hand.

Bonomo may have dominated the table throughout the show, but in the hand below, Magnus shocks Bonomo with a check-shove.

Lights, Camera, Action

Season seven of Entourage debuted last night and just in case you didn’t watch the show, you should know that you missed a Chris Moneymaker and Antonio Esfandiari cameo. They were on set of Vincent Chase’s (actor Adrian Grenier) film, playing poker with Nick Cassavetes who was playing the director of the movie. It was short and sweet. Kind of like this update.

Betting Against Whom?

You would think that by now, most people have learned not to make bets against Phil Ivey. Erik Seidel is one of them, tweeting recently that he took seven-to-one on Ivey winning another bracelet in the US this year. According Seidel’s Twitter page, “Some very sharp ppl on the other side but I expect they’ll be sweating soon”

Allen Kessler took to TwoPlusTwo to get the opinions of the community members and most of the responses are, “Never bet against Ivey.”

See what they have to say here.

Fore!

We all know that poker players love their golf. Every time you turn around, there’s a new golf prop bet taking place, whether it’s Erick Lindgren playing 72 holes, carrying his own bag in 108-degree heat and needing to shoot under 100 or Daniel Negreanu and Patrik Antonius in a high-stakes golf match.

The Golf Channel isn’t blind to all the high-stakes bets on on the golf course and have gotten Doyle Brunson, Jack Binion, Dewey Tomko, and Mike Sexton to talk about it on the hit show, Golf in America. The feature is on gambler-turned-golf-course-pro perty-developer Bill Walters. It airs on the Golf Channel Tuesday June 29 at 9 p.m. EDT.

Check out a sneak peek at TheGolfChannel.com.

Quiz Time

We love pop quizzes, that is, if they aren’t happening to us. Lynn Gilmartin put Barry Greenstein, Erick Lindgren, Joe Cada, and Phil Hellmuth to the test. How much Australian slang do these Yanks know? Watch the video below to find out.

Following us on Twitter is a really good idea. Another good idea? Facebook.

The Weekly Turbo: PokerStars Sponsors Basketball Team and Soccer Star, The Life of Ivey, and More

June 27th, 2010 -- Posted in Poker News | No Comments »

2010 June 27, Elaine Chaivarlis

This week, we told you about the announcement of the sponsorship of a basketball team and a soccer star by PokerStars. On top of that, Phil Ivey is living the life. The Weekly Turbo is bringing you what you missed this week when you were running deep in whatever tournament you were running deep in.

He Shoots! He Scores!

PokerStars has signed a 12-month sponsorship agreement with the Spanish Basketball Federation. This comes just a few months before the 2010 FIBA World Championship that will take place in Turkey in August.

PokerStars branding will be seen throughout Spain’s preparation for the world championships and also during the competition. This sponsorship will give PokerStars’ players the opportunity to win tickets to warm-up games and the championship tournament through various tournaments on the online poker site.

“Our client PokerStars is very proud to become sponsor of the Federación Española de Baloncesto. Being a global brand, this is a significant opportunity to join a leading sport. PokerStars sponsors numerous teams and sportsmen of international standing and being able to co-operate with the World and European champion is an exciting project by which to convey values like excellence, competition and fair play,” Juanjo Marquez, CEO of the agency representing PokerStars in Spain said.

Want to win your way to one of the games? Sign up for a PokerStars account today.

Life of Ivey

If you haven’t heard that Phil Ivey won his eighth World Series of Poker gold bracelet this week, then you must have been living under a rock. Tina Tran was there with the trusty PokerRoad Flip cam to capture Ivey in his element. He watched Rocky in his trailer prior to the final table, and Tran discussed fashion with him on his way to the Amazon Room.

Business and Poker

First it was Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh who compared poker and business, and now Greg Go has taken his shot. Go is the founder of Wise Bread, a blog that helps readers live large on a small budget. He has published 16 business lessons he learned from poker.

Number one on the list? A Game of Incomplete Information: “poker is a game of incomplete information. The one who fills in the blanks faster and more accurately wins,” and translating to business, “if you consistently make good guesses, your business will be profitable, if you consistently make bad bets, your business goes broke.”

Be tight aggressive comes in at number four, bluff strategically to maintain your image is number six, and in the tenth spot, don’t tap the glass.

Find out all 16 lessons at USNews.com.

Jones’ New Gig

The Ladies International Poker Series (LIPS) and Heads Up Entertainment, the operators of the Canadian Poker Tour (CPT), have partnered to host the CPT Ladies event in Canada. Newly minted Red Pro Lacey Jones will be the “Face of LIPS.”

“Lacey is the perfect match as the Host for LIPS in Canada. She is an avid supporter of women in poker and a strong player herself,” said Lupe Soto, LIPS Tour Founder.

Ante Up for Africa

Ante Up for Africa is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness for Africans in need. The organization was founded by Don Cheadle, Annie Duke and Norman Epstein. Every year, Ante Up for Africa hosts a charity poker event at the World Series of Poker.

This year, Ante Up for Africa is launching an online campaign to raise $10,000 by the start of the WSOP Main Event on July 5.

“$10,000 is enough to change one person’s life at the World Series of Poker. But in Africa, it can change thousands of lives,” Duke said. “With the poker world focused on the WSOP right now, we’re hoping poker players will once again step up and contribute, and even put aside at least the money towards one satellite buy-in, and instead donate it online to Ante Up For Africa, where the money can provide much-needed assistance to those in need in Africa.”

The 2010 Canadian Open Poker Championships will host the inaugural LIPS hosted event on August 22, 2010.

“I am thrilled for this opportunity to work with LIPS and the CPT in this capacity,” Jones said.  “LIPS has paved the way for many women in poker and is one of the most respected brands in women’s poker today. I look forward to meeting women across Canada that love the sport as much as I do.”

The Nightly Turbo: Phil Laak’s Record Broken, a Sad Day for French Online Poker Players, and More

June 26th, 2010 -- Posted in Poker News | No Comments »

2010 June 25, Elaine Chaivarlis

It seems as though Phil Laak didn’t get to hold onto his record for too long, French online poker players have been blocked from PokerStars, and we might have to take a deeper look into this mindset thing.

In Case You Missed It

The UIGEA was enacted almost a month ago. How much has changed on the online poker front? Read this to find out.

Phil Ivey’s eighth gold-bracelet win earlier this week has a lot of people talking about how many more he will win in his lifetime. Ivey thinks he can win 30. PokerNews’ Editor-in-Chief Matthew Parvis thinks he can do it. Check out why here.

The 28th day of the 2010 World Series of Poker saw Phil Hellmuth go for his 12th gold bracelet. Did he do it? Find out in the recap.

One Up

In less than a month, Phil Laak’s record of most consecutive hours of poker played may have been broken. Three amateur poker players from Austria apparently took on the task of beating Laak’s 115-hour record. We’re sure he thought someone would take up the challenge, but we’re also sure he didn’t think it would happen so soon.

According to the rumor, seven players began on June 19 at 7:14 a.m. local time in Austria. “Together, we will bring the world record from Las Vegas to Tirol,” said a statement on their website.

Master of Mindset

Sam Chauhan has been the mindset master to the poker stars for quite some time now, and his students have produced some pretty impressive results. Antonio Esfandiari made a deep run in the 2009 WSOP Main Event. Then Josh Arieh came in second at the WPT Five Diamond, Gavin Smith won the Canadian Poker Tour event, Phil Hellmuth final-tabled the WPT Bay 101, and David Williams won the WPT World Championship.

Well, his clients are at it again at the 2010 World Series of Poker. Hellmuth went for his 12th gold bracelet on Thursday but came away from the final table in seventh place. Bernard Lee made it to Day 3 of Event #42, Smith is holding strong in Event #44, and Marco Traniello is 12th in chips in the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E.

Check out how he does it at MindSetVT.com.

I Challenge You

CardRunners wants to see how good you can be at poker. The training site is giving away $10,000 in cash and prizes to the the top five winners of this contest.

All you have to do is submit a training video, which will be voted on by CardRunners members. The grand prize winner will receive $5,000 and an offer to become a CardRunners instructor.

Second place gets $2,500, third place gets $1,000, fourth place gets $500, and if you come in fifth, you get a deluxe poker chip set (probably so you can work on your skills). You only have until July 1 to get these submissions in so sign up to an online poker site and start teaching.

Check out all the information on the competition here.

PokerNews MiniSOP
